When they’re not busy making a difference for seniors and caregivers at Total Senior Care, Susan Ostrander and Tammy Gardiner volunteer their time with the Red Cross.
Tammy Gardiner, SHRM – CP is the Administrative Coordinator for TSC, and has been volunteering for the Red Cross since 2014. She volunteered 7,889 hours last year, the most in the Buffalo chapter! Susan Ostrander, the Associate Program Director at TSC, has been volunteering for the Red Cross since 2017. She put in 7,612.75 volunteer hours last year.
Both Susan and Tammy are Leads for Cattaraugus County for the Disaster Action Team. They often report to local house fires in Cattaraugus County, but also assist with Chautauqua and Allegany County. They are trained for National Disasters as well. Last month, Tammy and Susan were recognized for their volunteer work at the Annual Dinner for the Red Cross.
While volunteering clearly makes a significant difference for organizations that need assistance, research has shown that it can even have health benefits for participants. According to the Mayo Clinic, volunteering can decrease depression, provide a sense of purpose, improve physical and mental health, reduce stress, increase your life expectancy, and help you develop new relationships.
You too can experience the health benefits of volunteering by reaching out to a nonprofit that’s important to you, or by searching online for organizations in your community. Total Senior Care’s sister organization, HomeCare & Hospice is always looking for event volunteers to help spread awareness of their services. You can learn more about their volunteer program by visiting www.homecare-hospice.org/volunteer or by contacting their Volunteer Coordinator, Peggy Gillespie at (716) 372-2106.
