this beautiful native plant is difficult to notice until it bursts into bloom in mid-summer

I painted this partly to remind myself not to miss the fall aspens there

but an amalgamation of what I see in my mind when I think of my mid-summer visits to that area

and ultimately discover some of the surprising and hidden connections that make tropical forests so fascinating—and so fragile
